Playing under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Anastasija Sevastova completed the biggest upset on a day of upsets, knocking off No. 3 seed and 2016 French Open champion Garbiñe Muguruza.
Here are five things to know about the 26-year-old Latvian:
- She made her debut in 2006 and finished in the year-end Top 100 in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
- She got off to a promising start to her career, reaching the quarterfinals or better at WTA events 11 times between 2009 and 2013 and winning her first WTA title in Estoril, Portugal, in 2010. She peaked at a career-best No. 36 in 2011.
- From there, a series of injuries and illnesses followed, knocking her out of the Top 100. In May 2013, she officially announced her retirement from tennis.
- Healthy and rested, she ended her 18-month retirement in January 2015 and promptly won the singles and doubles titles in her first tournament: a $10,000 event in Egypt. By the end of the year, she was back to No. 110 in the world.
- She has continued her rise this year. She played in the Australian Open main draw for her first Grand Slam since 2011 and reached the second round of the French Open. She also competed in the Wimbledon main draw, coming in to US Open ranked No. 48.
