The top-seeded women's doubles team of Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza climbed back from an 0-5 opening-set hole to win 12 of the last 13 games and beat the No. 9-seeded sister team of Yung-Jan and Hao-Ching Chan, 7-6, 6-1, on Tuesday to reach the semifinals.
The opening games left Hingis in a daze.
“Everything was happening so fast,” said Hingis.
But with Mirza steadying the team with her strong play, the reigning Wimbledon champions mounted a winning comeback on a sun-baked Louis Armstrong Stadium court.
“At 2-0, all I said was like, 'Try to get two games and get some rhythm for the second set,' and all of sudden it was 5-5,” said Mirza.
After taking the tiebreak 7-5 to win the 50-minute first set, Hingis and Mirza ran through the final set in 35 minutes and into a matchup against No. 11 seeds Sara Errani and Flavia Pennetta.
The Italian duo edged No. 15 Lara Arruabarrena-Andreja Klepac, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2. Pennetta is seeing double duty this week, as she is the only player also still alive in the singles draw, having reached the quarterfinals.
On the men's side, the No. 8-seeded pair of Jamie Murray-John Peers and No. 12 Pierre-Hugues Herbert-Nicolas Mahut booked the first two spots in the men’s semifinals with hard-fought upset victories.
Murray-Peers rallied to beat the No, 4-seeded pair of Marcin Matkowski-Nenad Zimonjic, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. They will meet the winner of the match between two unseeded teams, Steve Johnson-Sam Querrey against Leonardo Mayer-Joao Sousa, which will be played Wednesday.
Herbert-Mahut upset No. 3 Jean-Julien Rojer-Horia Tecau, 7-6, 6-4, and await the winner of the match between No. 6 Rohan Bopanna-Florin Mergea and the unseeded team of Dominic Inglot-Robert Lindstedt.
The last semifinal pairing was completed in the mixed doubles competition. The unseeded duo of Andrea Hlavackova-Lukasz Kubot beat Anastasia Rodionova-Max Mirnyi, 6-4, 6-4, and will now face the unseeded pair of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Querrey. The American team edged No. 6 Yaroslava Shvedova-Juan Sebastian Cabal, 3-6, 6-4, [10-6].
