The top men’s and women’s seeds advanced with ease, but the No. 3 seeds in both draws were not so lucky on Day 2 of the US Open National Playoffs Men’s and Women’s Championships in New Haven, Conn.
On the men’s side, No. 1 seed Jeffrey Dadamo won his opening match, 6-2, 6-4, over Damon Gooch. Dadamo, a former NCAA doubles champion at Texas A&M, has transitioned his game from an outstanding collegiate career to the professional ranks, collecting two USTA Pro Circuit doubles titles and rising as high as No. 480 in the world in singles.
Falling yesterday, however, was the No. 3 seed Patrick Daciek, who lost to former Princeton University standout Matija Pecotic, 6-3, 6-2. Pecotic graduated from Princeton this year as one of the most decorated student-athletes in Ivy League tennis history. He is also competing in the US Open National Playoffs Mixed Doubles Championship with former Princeton teammate Lindsay Graff, who scored an upset of her own on Day 2 with a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-1 win over No. 3 seed Nika Kukharchuk in the Women’s Championship draw.
Charles Boyce, the No. 4 seed on the men's side, also advanced, defeating fellow teenager Elliot Orkin, 6-3, 6-2. Boyce is a top-ranked junior in the USTA Texas Section and has committed to playing at the University of California-Irvine. Tony Larson also advanced for the second straight day with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Andrew Ball.
Women’s top seed Mayo Hibi, competing in the Women’s Championship for the second straight year, cruised in her opening match with a 6-2, 6-1 over Magda Okruashvili. Hibi reached a career-high ranking of No. 247 in the world in July and has had an outstanding junior career, winning both the Easter Bowl and USTA International Spring Championships this spring.
Also in women's action, No. 2 Nicole Melichar defeated Kelcy McKenna, 6-4, 6-3, while No. 4 Peggy Porter won for the second straight day, defeating Meghan Kelley, 6-2, 6-4.
The US Open Men’s and Women’s Championships are being held Aug. 16-19 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale in New Haven, Conn., in conjunction with the New Haven Open at Yale, an Emirates Airline US Open Series event. The winners each receive a wild card into the 2013 US Open Qualifying Tournament, held Aug. 20-23 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
