More than 900 men and women competed in the US Open National Playoffs this year, but now the draws are each down to the final two vying to earn the spots in the US Open Qualifying Tournament.
In the women’s singles draw, it will be No. 1 vs. No. 2 for the title. Top seeded Mayo Hibi defeated No. 4 seed Peggy Porter, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals, and No. 2 Nicole Melichar battled Lindsay Graff for three sets before securing her spot in the final, winning 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
On the men’s side, No. 1 seed Jeffrey Dadamo enters the final as the favorite, having defeated Tony Larson, 6-3, 6-3. He will face unseeded Matija Pecotic, who upset No. 4 Charles Boyce, 6-2, 6-4, to earn a spot in the final Monday.
Dadamo and Hibi entered the tournament as the two most accomplished professionals in the draw, having reached career-high rankings of No. 480 and No. 247 in the world, respectively, but will be competing in the US Open National Playoffs Championship final for the first time.
Melichar, who has been ranked as high as No. 400 in the world, is the US Open National Playoffs veteran, having captured the Mixed Doubles crown in 2012 with Brian Battistone. The pair will compete to defend their title later this week in the Mixed Doubles Championship.
Pecotic, a former collegiate standout at Princeton University, looks to win his first US Open National Playoffs men’s title Monday and also is competing in the Mixed Doubles draw this week with his former Princeton teammate Graff.
The US Open Men’s and Women’s Championships are being held Aug. 16-19 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale in New Haven, Conn., in conjunction with the New Haven Open at Yale, an Emirates Airline US Open Series event. The winners each receive a wild card into the 2013 US Open Qualifying Tournament, held Aug. 20-23 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
