The 2013 US Open National Playoffs kicked off in May, and after 13 sectional qualifying tournaments and 950 singles competitors, Jeffrey Dadamo and Mayo Hibi were the two who came away with the ultimate prizes: spots in the US Open Qualifying Tournament.

Top seeds Dadamo and Hibi were crowned the 2013 US Open National Playoffs men’s and women’s champions Monday and, with their victories, will compete in qualifying for the 2013 US Open. The US Open Qualifying Tournament runs from Aug. 20-23 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home of the US Open.

In the finals, Hibi, 17, defeated No. 2 seed Nicole Melichar, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, and Dadamo, 24, defeated unseeded Matija Pecotic, 6-4, 6-4.

The US Open National Playoffs titles are the latest achievements in the advancing careers of Hibi and Dadamo.

Hibi has enjoyed a standout junior career, winning both the prestigious Easter Bowl and the USTA International Spring Championships this year as well as two USTA Pro Circuit titles, and she reached a career-high ranking of No. 247 in the WTA rankings in July. She also competed in the 2012 US Open Qualifying Tournament and now looks to make her first career US Open main draw.

Hibi, who lives in the U.S. but represents Japan, plays her first qualifying match Wednesday against American Allie Kiick.

Dadamo has successfully transitioned from the collegiate ranks to the professional level. He was the 2011 NCAA men’s doubles champion at Texas A&M University with Austin Krajicek, and since turning professional, he has won two USTA Pro Circuit doubles titles and has been ranked as high as No. 480 in the world in singles.

This will be Dadamo’s first time competing in the US Open Qualifying Tournament. He will open against Spain’s Guillermo Olaso, also on Wednesday.

The US Open National Playoffs Men’s and Women’s Championships were held Aug. 16-19 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale in New Haven, Conn., in conjunction with the New Haven Open at Yale, an Emirates Airline US Open Series event.

There were 950 men and women (649 men and 301 women) who competed in the fourth year of the US Open National Playoffs in singles, playing in one of 13 sectional qualifying tournaments held throughout the United States. The US Open National Playoffs are designed to bring the spirit of the US Open to cities and sections across the country, making the US Open eligible to anyone and everyone 14 and over with the passion to compete, regardless of playing ability or nationality. The 2013 US Open National Playoffs Mixed Doubles Championship will take place in New Haven, Aug. 21-24, with the winning team earning a wild card into the main draw of the 2013 US Open.
