Overcoming adversity, Ortiz chases her tennis dreams


Laura Ortiz has learned the sport of tennis, ran two triathlons and started a career as a personal trainer – all after losing her leg six years ago. The upbeat Miami native is now trying to add another role to her sporting resume: US Open ballperson.

US Open Ballperson Tryouts bring in hundreds for summer fun


More than 350 hopefuls took to the courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, trying to earn the coolest summer job in sports: being a ballperson at the 2014 US Open.

Tennis fans live the dream at 2014 Ballperson Tryouts


Several hundred diehard tennis fans came out to the US Open Ballperson Tryouts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, eager to make their biggest tennis fantasies come true.


WHAT: Approximately 80 sought-after positions as ballpersons for the 2015 US Open are up for grabs. Prospective ballpersons will be evaluated by US Open officials on their running, throwing and catching skills.
Please download and sign the 2015 US Open Ballpersons Audition Release and Waiver Agreement, which can be accessed here. ***IMPORTANT: You MUST bring a completed and signed waiver in order to participate in the tryouts. Furthermore, all applicants between the ages 14-17 MUST have a legal guardian sign the form in order to participate. No exceptions.
WHO: Ages 14 and older trying out for the coolest summer job in sports.
WHEN: Thursday, June 25*
General Public Open Tryouts - 3 p.m. registration
Registration line for the general public begins forming at 3 p.m. Evaluation process will begin at approximately 4 p.m., after a welcome by US Open Ballperson Director Tina Taps and a veteran ballperson demonstration. 
WHERE: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Flushing, N.Y.
- US Open ballpersons are paid an hourly wage.
- Ralph Lauren is the official outfitter of the US Open ballpersons.
- The 2015 US Open Qualifying Tournament will be held Tuesday, Aug. 25, through Friday, Aug. 28. The 2015 US Open main draw will be held Monday, Aug. 31, through Sunday, Sept. 13.
