On Aug. 30, 2011, defending French Open champion and No. 6 seed Li Na fell to unseeded Romanian upstart Simona Halep, 6-2, 7-5, in the opening round of the US Open.

Coupled with the withdrawal of Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters and Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova's upset defeat at the hands of Alexandra Dulgheru, Li's loss meant that none of the major winners from 2011 advanced out of the opening round in Flushing Meadows.

Li, a two-time major champion, would bounce back to reach the third round in 2012 and the semifinals in 2013 – in what would be her final US Open appearance before retiring at age 32, bedeviled by recurring knee problems.
