US Open Moments: Aug. 31, 2002

The first all-women's night session at the US Open features Martina Hingis vs. Amanda Coetzer, Jennifer Capriati (pictured) vs. Meghann Shaughnessy, and HIngis and Anna Kournikova teaming up in doubles.

On Aug. 31, 2002, the first-ever, all-women’s night session at the US Open was played in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Martina Hingis kicked things off by defeating Amanda Coetzer, 6-3, 6-4, followed by Jennifer Capriati (pictured) topping Meghann Shaughnessy, 6-2, 6-2. The doubles team of Hingis and Anna Kournikova wrapped things up by defeating Laura Granville and Jennifer Hopkins, 6-1, 6-2.

Hingis, the 1997 US Open singles champion, would go on to reach the fourth round of the 2002 Open before succumbing to Monica Seles, while Capriati fell in the quarterfinals to Amelie Mauresmo. Hingis and Kournikova, the 2002 Australian Open women's dhoubles champions, lost in the quarterfinals.
