Winning a US Open title is a career highlight for most players, whether it comes in singles, doubles or mixed doubles. Winning all three earns you a place among the tennis immortals.
Since the dawn of the Open era in 1968, only six players have ever won a US Open title in singles, doubles and mixed doubles in their careers. Notably, all six are women, as no man during the Open era has won both a singles and a mixed doubles title.
Leading the way is the inimitable Martina Navratilova, who won a combined 16 US Open championships and stands as the last player to capture the Triple Crown – winning all three disciplines at a single Slam in the same year. She accomplished the feat at the 1987 US Open, defeating Steffi Graf in the women’s singles final, taking the women’s doubles with longtime partner Pam Shriver and teaming with Emilio Sanchez to win the mixed.
The only other player to win a Triple Crown at the US Open is Margaret Court. The Aussie did so in 1970, winning the women’s doubles with Judy Dalton and the mixed doubles with Marty Riessen.
The only active players to have hoisted all three Flushing trophies are Serena Williams and Martina Hingis. Williams won her first US Open title in mixed doubles as a 16-year-old in 1998 with Max Mirnyi, captured the first of her six singles title the next year and claimed the women’s doubles with sister Venus in 1999 and 2009. Hingis, meantime, has spread her titles over three decades, winning the 1997 singles and 1998 women’s doubles crowns (with Jana Novotna) and adding a second women’s doubles (with Sania Mirza) and her first mixed doubles (with Leander Paes) in 2015.
Rounding out the list of tri-titlists is Billie Jean King, who won three of each in the Open era (and a few prior to that), and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, who won a 2000 mixed doubles title with Jared Palmer to add to her 1994 singles title and 1993-94 doubles titles, with Helena Sukova and Novotna, respectively.
