With his victory Sunday over Stan Wawrinka at the BNP Paribas Open, Roger Federer has now won five Indian Wells titles, five Australian Open titles and five US Open crowns – an impressive display worthy of perhaps the game’s all-time best player.

The Indian Wells title also marked the third time the 18-time Grand Slam champion has won both the Australian Open and the BNP Paribas Open – the two biggest hard-court events of the early season – in the same year.

If past is precedent, that bodes well for Federer’s chances at the 2017 US Open.

In each of the prior two occurrences he won both the Australian Open and Indian Wells in the same year, 2004 and 2006, Federer went on to win that year’s US Open. A repeat later this summer would deliver another piece of history – an Open era-record sixth US Open men’s singles championship.
