A month ago, we looked at the players who have won the French Open and US Open in the same year, which netted out at 11 (four men, seven women). As it turns out, a far more common occurrence is winning back-to-back, same-year Slams at Wimbledon and the US Open.

Since the dawn of the Open era in 1968, a total of 16 players have pulled off the London-New York single-year sweep: an even eight men and eight women.

The frequency at which the feat has been accomplished is pretty impressive. Those eight women combined to do it a total of 17 times, the men a total of 15 times.

Leading the way at five Wimbledon-US Open sweeps is Steffi Graf, followed among women by Martina Navratilova with four. The only other women to sweep the two tournaments on more than one occasion are the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus. The surprise in the women’s department is that Chris Evert only achieved the double on one occasion, in 1976.

In a statistical oddity, the double was achieved in the women’s game 10 times from 1983 to 1997 but only once since 2002 – in 2012, by Serena, who will have the chance to do it again this year.

The men are led by four-time London-New York doubler Roger Federer. Next are a series of men who have achieved the feat on two occasions: Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras and Novak Djokovic. The eyebrow-raiser there is Sampras. His 12 combined Wimbledon and US Open titles are matched only by Federer, but the American has doubled three fewer times, dispersing his seven Wimbledon titles and five US Open titles evenly over a 12-year span from 1990 to 2002.
