The fifth edition of the US Open National Playoffs kicked off on Friday, with with seven out of eight seeded players in the Men’s and Women’s Singles Championships advancing to the quarterfinals.

The women were the first to take the court at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., with 15-year-old Kelly Chen scoring the biggest upset of the day over No. 2 seed Denise Muresan, 6-3, 7-5. Chen won her first career USTA Pro Circuit singles title last month, in Austin, Texas.

The No. 3 seed Jennifer Elie, No. 4 seed Ashley Weinhold and No. 5 seed Jacqueline Cako also advanced to the quarterfinals with straightforward victories.

Another significant upset was Michaela Gordon defeating last year’s US Open National Playoffs singles finalist Nicole Melichar, 7-5, 6-1. At just 15 years old, Gordon is the youngest player competing in this year’s event. She will also participate in the US Open Junior Championships in two weeks.

On the men’s side, No. 1 seed Sanam Singh wasted little time in moving past Anton Protsenko, 6-3, 6-3. The No. 2 seed and defending US Open National Playoffs singles champion Jeff Dadamo, No. 3 seed Jesse Witten and No. 4 seed Ronnie Schneider also recorded straight-set victories to move into Saturday’s schedule of play.
