THE BUZZ: A recording artist, actress, model, film producer, record producer and writer, the late Houston is also remembered for some stirring vocal performances at sporting events. Christening the brand new Arthur Ashe Stadium on Opening Night of the 1997 US Open, a parade of past US Open champions and a crowd of 20,000-plus spectators watched Houston sing "One Moment in Time" to officially kick off the first night session inside Ashe.
"This is an honor to come celebrate the opening of the Arthur Ashe Stadium," said Houston at the opening of her performance. "This is incredible – an incredible evening of champions. Like Arthur, each of you had your moment in time. So tonight, I would like to dedicate this song to all of you."
THE IMPACT: Houston was one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold more than 200 million records worldwide. Her success was not only tied into record album sales, but the respect of her peers in the entertainment world with six Grammy Awards, two Emmy Awards and 30 Billboard Music Awards. Just as Ashe had influenced people of all colors and backgrounds to strive to achieve through his many works, Houston would inspire the careers of fellow pop icons that would later perform in Ashe Stadium, such as Rihanna and Britney Spears.
